Some cosmetic products contain information about the product's pH - "skin-friendly pH", "skin-neutral pH", "balanced pH". What is the pH of a product and does every product have a pH?
pH is a measure of the flow of hydrogen ions in water, so it only applies to products that contain water. In anhydrous products, e.g. oils or loose products, and water-in-oil emulsions, there is no flow of hydrogen ions, so pH testing is not performed.
The pH scale represents the acidity and alkalinity of water solutions. At the beginning of the scale, there are strong acids, including hydrochloric acid with a pH of 0, at the end of the scale there are strong bases such as sodium hydroxide solution with a pH of 14.
The colours on the pH scale are not accidental – when testing the pH level with litmus paper, the paper will turn an appropriate colour depending on the pH value.
Human skin is a unique organ, very diverse in terms of structure on different parts of the body. The pH values of the skin also vary, e.g. the pH of the skin under the eyes is close to 7, the pH of the intimate areas is acidic 3.6–4.5, the pH of the forearm is 5.4–5.9, and the pH of the armpits and groin is approximately 6.5. These values may vary depending on gender, age or health condition. Therefore, it is difficult to assume an average pH value for the entire body, but it can be said that it is a slightly acidic environment.
The human body requires care, for which we use a range of cosmetics for various purposes. The purpose of the cosmetic should take into account the needs of the skin of the a given body area for which the product is intended. The basic assumption is always that a cosmetic product should be safe for the skin. To ensure the safety of a cosmetic product, it must meet stringent microbiological conditions and, in the case of products containing water, also have an appropriate pH. The safety of products is confirmed by dermatological, instrumental and application tests. Each cosmetic must have a positive safety assessment signed by an independent safety assessor from an accredited laboratory.
In the case of products intended for washing, it is particularly important to maintain the pH compatibility of the product with the skin - so that the pH is neutral for the skin. Skin neutrality does not mean a pH value of 7, but rather the product's pH compatibility with the skin's pH so as not to disturb the balance of the skin's lipid layer during washing. The pH of the product does not have to be exactly the same as the pH of the skin, but it should be within a similar acidity range.
The table below shows Seni Care products with an indication of which pH value is measured. All these products have a skin-friendly pH that is neutral to the skin. All Seni Care products, although some do not measure the pH value, are skin-friendly due to the recipes developed with skin safety in mind.
