Urinary incontinence (UI) is a condition we are uncomfortable talking about even though it affects many of us, especially after the age of 50. It's a problem that can cause shame and anxiety, leading people to limit their activities and give up their passions. However, it's important to remember that while urinary incontinence can be a difficult experience, you don't have to change your lifestyle or give up being active. Understanding what incontinence is and what solutions are available to help is the first step toward regaining control and a sense of security.
Incontinence, defined as the involuntary leakage of urine, is a common problem. Urinary incontinence can have different causes and levels of severity, so to better manage it, it's helpful to know the various types of UI:
This is the most frequently diagnosed type of UI, especially in women, accounting for about half of all cases. It's characterised by involuntary urine leakage that occurs when abdominal pressure increases. This can include activities such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting weights, running, jumping, or even brisk walking.
The primary cause of stress incontinence is a weakening of the pelvic floor muscles, which are unable to keep the urethra closed under sudden pressure. Risk factors for stress incontinence include: pregnancy and childbirth, especially multiple births; menopause; age (muscle strength naturally declines over time); a sedentary lifestyle and heavy physical labour; and, in men, an enlarged prostate.
This type of UI is defined by a sudden, overwhelming urge to urinate, often leading to immediate and involuntary urine leakage. The amount of urine leaked is usually large, and the problem can occur both at night (nocturia) and during the day (urinary frequency). The leading cause is an overactive or unstable detrusor muscle in the bladder.
Factors that may contribute to urge incontinence include neurological diseases, urinary stones, other pathological changes in the urinary tract, and frequent urinary tract infections.
This is a combination of the symptoms of both stress and urge incontinence. People with this type of incontinence experience both involuntary urine leakage during physical exertion (e.g., coughing, sneezing) and sudden, uncontrolled urges. Typically, one of these types is more dominant.
While UI can be associated with discomfort, a loss of confidence, and a lack of control, it doesn't have to mean giving up your current lifestyle. If you're an active, social person and want to continue pursuing your passions and interests, look for suitable absorbent products that match your level of incontinence, body shape, and activities. Also, notice whether they are skin-friendly and sufficiently absorbent.
Well-chosen absorbent products provide not only physical comfort but also daily peace of mind and confidence. Ensure the products are comfortable and discreet, and that they effectively control unpleasant odours, a common concern for people with incontinence. With Seni absorbent products, you can continue your activities with confidence and security.
Many people, especially women, still use sanitary pads when they first notice symptoms of incontinence. However, it's worth noting that they are not a suitable solution for urinary incontinence. Pads, even the most absorbent ones, like those for nighttime use, may not be able to handle urine absorption and can leak as a result. Urine has a different density than menstrual blood, which requires the use of specialised absorbent products that neutralise odour and absorb a larger amount of moisture.
Seni Active absorbent underwear is a comprehensive solution created specifically for active individuals with moderate and severe urinary incontinence. Seni Active are put on just like regular underwear, fitting the body snugly. They are flexible and discreet under clothing, allowing for complete freedom in any situation—whether you're going to the store, a doctor's appointment, the cinema, church, or for a walk in the mountains.
