What is a urinary diary?

A urinary diary is a useful tool – you can write down important information like the total number of your visits to the toilet, frequency of urine loss episodes, and other information, which can help a specialist to determine the level and kind of incontinence you are dealing with.

The urinary diary organises the following information:

  • amount of fluids taken throughout the day (including soups, etc),
  • number of controlled bladder voiding and urine loss episodes,
  • activities during which urine loss happens,
  • used absorbent products.

What are the benefits of keeping a urinary diary?

Keeping such a diary for a few days before visiting a doctor will help you stay confident during the visit – you will be able to answer all your doctor’s questions precisely having all the necessary information with you.

A reliable urinary diary is one that is kept for 2–3 days before a visit; however it is advised to write down your observations for a few days extra. Print several copies of a urinary diary and remember about filling it in for a few days before seeing a doctor.
